Apophonic glide creation in the augmented Measures in Classical Arabic

Franziska Keller (University of Salzburg)

This talk investigates the hypothesis that glides in verbal roots are underlyingly zero elements and that their surface form is derived through the apophonic path x → i → a → u → u (Guerssel & Lowenstamm 1996; Chekayri & Scheer 1996, 2003). More specifically, we examine the augmented Measures II–X in Classical Arabic to determine whether the same derivational mechanisms responsible for glide creation can be applied. To this end, we propose fixed patterns for the augmented Measures that must be satisfied via the Template Satisfaction Principle. We observe that in some cases glide creation is not necessary to satisfy the templates, whereas in other cases glides appear on the surface whose origin cannot be derived through apophony.
