Présentation de Francesco VALLEROSSA (U. Stockholm):

Exploring the differential impact of French as L1/L2 on Italian L3 tense-aspect judgments: Transfer patterns among three beginner students in the Swedish university context

The presentation will discuss the acquisition of tense-aspect morphology in Italian as an additional language among three beginner students in the Swedish university context. All students had knowledge of Swedish, English and French, in each case acquired in a particular chronological order. The three students completed a test battery consisting of two C-tests and three interpretation tests of aspectual contrasts in English, French and Italian. The Italian interpretation test was complemented by written comments. The quantitative analysis of the Italian interpretation test showed that the judgments of the students varied depending on tense-aspect configurations. The qualitative analysis of the comments revealed four categories: (i) explicit rules, (ii) intuition, (iii) other languages, and (iv) uncertainty/unknown, differently distributed among the students. The results of these combined analyses will be discussed in light of some recent theoretical L3 transfer models suggesting a differential use of background languages depending on the type of grammatical structures.
