Geminates in Maaloula Aramaic
Ghattas Eid
This presentation is based on my published study (Eid 2024: chap. 9), which investigated the phonological and phonetic properties of geminates in Maaloula Aramaic (a Western Neo-Aramaic dialect). In this talk, I will show how Maaloula Aramaic geminates arise (e.g., as a result of morphological or phonological processes), how they can be phonologically represented, and how gemination interacts with other phonological processes such as stress and vowel epenthesis. I will also present the results of my examination of the phonetic properties of these geminates, focusing on two acoustic correlates of gemination: the duration of the consonant itself and the duration of the preceding vowel.
