Presentation on Japanese Sign Language (Nihon Shuwa)

Sign Language Inheritance of Hearing Children of Deaf Adult/s (Coda) in Japan and other related topics to Japanese Sign Language

Asuka ANDO, Assistant Professor at Center for Coproduction of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, The University of Tokyo

In this presentation, I will provide a brief overview of Japanese Sign Language (JSL) and the status of sign language in Japan, followed by a discussion on “sign language inheritance” among codas (Hearing Children of Deaf Adult/s).

As a coda myself, born to and raised by Deaf parents, my previous research has focused on analyzing narratives among codas (also myself and other codas) to examine their changing perceptions toward sign language and the processes through which they do/do not come to use it. Furthermore, I will introduce the JSL and AI project which I have been involved in.
